OpenBSD 8.0: Bigger VMs, Faster Encrypted Swap and a Taste of Wine

OpenBSD 8.0, the project’s 61st release, is out.

Highlights

  • The vmm/vmd hypervisor now runs multiprocessor VMs with up to 64 vCPUs.
  • Kernel virtual address space on x86-64 grows from 4 GB to 512 GB, which helps GPUs with lots of VRAM.
  • Hibernation on Arm64, and CPU AES for faster encrypted swap on x86-64 and Arm64.
  • Updated qwx driver for Qualcomm Wi-Fi 6.
  • OpenSSH 10.6, LibreSSL 4.4.0, DRM graphics from Linux 6.18 and Clang/LLVM 22 as the default compiler. Loongson support is gone.
  • A proposed Wine port brings 64-bit Windows apps within reach.

My take

OpenBSD keeps doing it right: secure by default, steady improvements. Read the upgrade guide and keep up with the errata.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
