Ghostty 1.4.0 is out after seven months of work, and Linux gets a lot of love.
Highlights
- Full Kitty graphics protocol, including animation and relative placement. It’s the first terminal besides Kitty to do it all.
- Compressed scrollback: when idle, off-screen history gets compressed, cutting RAM for big histories by up to 90%. It decompresses when you scroll or search.
- Sharp text at fractional scaling like 125% and 150% in the GTK app. Bye, blurry fonts.
- A new EGL renderer on its own thread hands frames to GTK with DMA-BUFs. It needs a system EGL library.
- Better SSH support, and you can drag splits to rearrange them.
My take
The fractional scaling fix alone makes this worth it on a HiDPI Linux desktop. Update through your distro or the project and check the release notes first.
God Bless, and Happy hacking!
