Google says Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be “entirely off for K-12 student accounts until school administrators explicitly turn them on.”
What we know
- Admins can turn each product on separately, and settings can be set by grade
- The catch: Search has AI built in, so a school that wants no AI at all has to turn Search off too
- Reports put the change in early next year; Google hasn’t given a firm date
- Google also pushed its Guided Learning study mode with its own study numbers
My take
Off by default for kids is the right call. Bundling Search with AI so schools can’t get one without the other isn’t. Parents and schools should get a clean “Search, no AI” switch.
God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
