Domicile: Build Your Own Linux Desktop With HTML, CSS and JavaScript

Domicile is a new Wayland compositor built on a modified Chromium, so you can build a custom Linux desktop with HTML, CSS and JavaScript/TypeScript. Phoronix has the details.

How it works

  • Native Wayland windows show up as DOM elements, so you can style, transform and animate them like a web page
  • Tiling comes from Manganese, Sway-inspired Rust code
  • It was built with help from Claude Code

My take

A browser engine as your compositor sounds a little wild to me, and I’d want to know the memory and security costs. But for web devs who’ve always wanted to rice their desktop, it could be fun. Try it in a VM.

Isolate it: try it in a disposable VM first, with a snapshot you can roll back.

God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
