Plan: Trying HyprBSD in a VM Next to My Omarchy Notes

This is a plan, not a write-up. I haven’t run HyprBSD yet. After reading about it on Phoronix, I want to see how a Hyprland desktop on FreeBSD compares with what I know from Omarchy.

The plan

  1. Download the HyprBSD image from the project and verify its checksum.
  2. Create a fresh VM with a few CPUs, 8GB+ RAM and a 40GB disk, and snapshot it before install.
  3. Run the graphical installer and time it against the claimed three minutes.
  4. Compare day-one stuff side by side with my Omarchy notes: keybindings, the bar and launcher, the update flow and package management (pkg vs. pacman).
  5. Check XWayland apps, and note what VM graphics can’t tell me (NVIDIA and Steam really need bare metal).
  6. Roll back to the snapshot when done.

Questions I want answered

  • How close does it feel to Omarchy’s Hyprland setup?
  • How painful is it to update and keep current?
  • What breaks in a VM that would work on real hardware?

Review before you install: read the release notes yourself, back up your config, and try new versions somewhere you can afford to break first.

Isolate it: try this in a disposable VM first, with a snapshot you can roll back to. Don’t point it at a machine you care about.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
