Model shopping is a trap if you chase every launch post. GenAI Brief’s October 2026 open-weight roundup is a useful shortlist: Gemma 4, gpt-oss, Mistral Medium 3.5, and Muse Glimmer 30B. I am not crowning a winner from a couch. I am picking how to choose without burning a weekend on leaderboard cosplay.
My filters
License you can live with. Weights you can actually download. Context long enough for your repo. Quants that fit the GPU (or MLX box) you already own. Tool-calling that does not freestyle new APIs. Everything else is marketing. If a card cannot clear those filters, it is entertainment, not infrastructure.
For coding agents I bias toward models that follow tools without inventing functions. For writing I bias toward ones that do not flatten into corporate sludge. For private docs I bias toward whatever runs fully local with a sandbox in front of it — Garuda-style isolation if you have it, at least a hard network deny if you do not.
Practical plan
Pick one from the list. Run the same three prompts every time — a refactor, a log diagnosis, a “summarize this RFC.” Keep a notes file with tokens/sec, fail modes, and whether it hallucinated a flag. Swap only when the notes say the new one wins on your work, not on someone else’s leaderboard.
None of this replaces reading the release notes yourself. Models and agent wrappers change weekly. My bar stays the same: license clarity, local option when secrets are involved, and a workflow I can reproduce without a sales call.
Pin the versions you validate. “Latest” is not a release strategy for anything that can write files.
Have a blessed day!
