Linux Mainline’s Network Fix Day

Some days the mainline feed is feature theater. October 9’s network-heavy roundup was the other kind: WireGuard handshake race fixes, stale ICMP memory cleanup, MT7922/7925 power work, Raspberry Pi CM5 Ethernet attention, and a note that ext4’s data=journal mode is being deprecated. That is a sysadmin grocery list, not a keynote.

What I am patching mental notes for

WireGuard races belong on the “read the commit before you shrug” list if you terminate tunnels at the edge. A handshake bug is the sort of thing that shows up as intermittent pain and a pile of blame aimed at the wrong layer. MediaTek Wi-Fi power bugs show up as mystery battery drain on laptops. CM5 Ethernet fixes matter the moment you ship another Pi-class appliance into a rack corner and pretend it is temporary.

The ext4 data=journal deprecation is a heads-up for anyone still clinging to that mount option for safety theater. Know your real durability story — barriers, disks, and application fsync — instead of a mode the filesystem wants to retire. Compatibility flags are not a backup strategy.

Action

Skim the dispatch. Match it against your fleet. Schedule the boring upgrades before the exciting outage. If you run WireGuard or a stack of CM5 nodes, promote those boxes in the patch order and keep a rollback image handy.

I am writing these as lab notes for people who actually patch boxes. If a link goes stale, chase the upstream project page. The habit matters more than any single advisory number in a blog post.

Schedule the maintenance window while the advisory is still boring. Waiting until it is exciting costs more.

Have a blessed day!
