GNOME OS Preview: GNOME Wants to Be a Real Distro

If you’ve ever wanted a Linux box that just updates itself and stays out of the way, this is the one to watch. Until now GNOME OS has only existed as a nightly build for testing GNOME’s development code. On October 16 the GNOME folks announced GNOME OS Preview, which tracks the stable GNOME releases instead, starting with GNOME 51.1.

The goal is to make GNOME OS an everyday general-purpose OS, not just a testing artifact. It leans on newer pieces like systemd-homed and systemd-sysupdate. Phoronix’s Michael Larabel says it worked well in his first quick testing.

Even though I’m currently in Omarchy and Hyprland, a Wayland tiling window manager, and I’ve been a Fluxbox user, I have spent much of my life in the GNOME desktop and preferred the GTK GNOME desktop when I was younger. It’s good to see them coming up with a lot of this. But an image-based, updates-just-work GNOME is a nice option for family machines or anybody who just wants a clean Linux desktop. Preview and Nightly ISOs are at os.gnome.org if you want to try it in a VM.

Happy Hacking!
