59 Baptized in Troughs: Revival Spills Out of a Mississippi Church

This one put a smile on my face. First Baptist Poplarville, a Mississippi church that had been struggling with decline, saw 59 people baptized during a week of revival in August, and the story is just now getting wider attention.

The last service was held at Pearl River Community College, and 52 people were baptized right there in two 12-foot concrete troughs outside the theater. The guest evangelist suggested it, the college president said yes, coaches helped haul in the troughs, and the local fire department filled them. Students FaceTimed their parents so they could watch. Six more had been baptized at the church the night before.

That’s what it looks like when the Spirit moves past the four walls. Nobody planned a stadium event. People were ready, so they got in the water. It reminds me of Acts 2:41: “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized.” No waiting for next quarter’s class, just obedience on the spot.

I love seeing this in small towns and on college campuses. Revival doesn’t need a big brand. It needs hungry people and a church willing to say yes when God opens the door. Pray these new believers get rooted, discipled and filled.

Have a blessed day!
