‘The Heart of Christ Has Not Changed’: Gavin Ortlund on Leading With Miracles

Here’s one I didn’t expect to cheer for so loud. Christian apologist Gavin Ortlund told CBN News that he used to treat the “weird parts” of the Bible as a liability, stuff you had to make up for with better arguments. Now he says those parts are an asset you can lead with.

What he said

  • By “weird” he means the supernatural: angels and demons, God healing people, and the Holy Spirit poured out in ways none of us can explain.
  • “It’s easy to be embarrassed when we should actually just lean into [it],” he said. “If we believe in the Scriptures, then we have to believe in a God who intervenes in history, and He heals people.”
  • He pointed to the leper who said, “If you are willing, you can make me clean,” and said the heart of Christ is still compassion: “I believe the heart of Christ has not changed. He’s still compassionate.”
  • He also said reason helps people see the truth, but the Holy Spirit has to lead the conversation.

My take

Amen! This is what a lot of us in Spirit-filled churches have been saying for years. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. He didn’t stop healing when the last page of Acts was written. I’ve seen too much prayer answered to be embarrassed about it.

Apologetics has its place, and Gavin’s a good one to listen to if you’re wrestling with doubt. But arguments alone rarely get anybody across the line. Love, truth and a real encounter with the power of God do. So pray for the sick. Expect Him to move. And when He does, tell people about it.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
