Revival Night Returns to the University of Memphis Lawn, Baptism Tubs and All

Students, families and church folks packed the University of Memphis UC Alumni Lawn on Friday night for the second Revival Night, a free outdoor night of worship, prayer and fellowship hosted with 901Church. About 400 came last year, and the goal was to meet or beat that.

The story behind it

  • Riley Simmons, a former member of the women’s track team, drove it. During a hard season she started asking why God had her in Memphis, and realized her purpose was bigger than athletics.
  • Getting a worship night with a band and baptism tubs approved on a public university campus wasn’t easy. She kept pushing, and it happened.
  • She did most of the marketing herself, and local ministries and businesses pitched in with food and merch.
  • Her vision is churches coming together “under one name.”

My take

“He set me free and I need people to experience it as well.” That’s the whole Gospel in one sentence. When you’ve been set free, you can’t keep quiet about it.

And this is what revival looks like a lot of the time. Not a famous preacher, just one student who heard from God and kept knocking on doors until the answer was yes. Galatians 6:9: don’t get weary in well doing. Keep praying for our campuses. The Spirit is moving on them.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
