Another Apple Silicon Mac is waking up under Linux. Omarchy Central reports developer Jonathan Goyvaerts has a 16-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro running Linux 7.3 with a lot working.
What works
- All six speakers “with Apple’s tuning,” the headphone jack and the mics.
- USB 3 at 5 Gbps on all three USB-C ports, the webcam, AV1 hardware decode with 4K60 in Firefox, and suspend on lid close.
- GPU acceleration, driving a Hyprland desktop.
The pull requests
- PR #408 adds the M4 Pro GPU (T6040) to the Asahi DRM driver. Stress tests ran clean, with no GPU faults or firmware crashes.
- PR #406 covers sound, with amp protection that shuts all six speakers down together if one amp reports a fault.
- PR #413 keeps other apps, the compositor included, alive when one client crashes the GPU.
None are merged yet. He says they “should be in Omarchy soon,” but that’s his estimate. The GPU needs his own boot loader for now, since m1n1 can’t set up the GPU on this chip yet, and it only takes GPU firmware from macOS 26.6.
My take
M-series support keeps moving faster than I expected. Six speakers with proper amp protection is the kind of detail that tells you this is being done right.
Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
