Daemonarchy Puts the Omarchy Desktop on FreeBSD, and DHH Loves It

Omarchy just left Linux. Daemonarchy, a project Jordan Hubbard started on GitHub on October 1, installs Omarchy 4.0.4 on FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT, Omarchy Central reports. The name is “Omarchy’s -archy, ruled by the BSD daemon.” DHH quote-posted it: “Omarchy on FreeBSD! So cool.”

What you get

  • Daemonarchy 1.1.1 (October 18) is an x86-64 ISO just under 2 GiB, booting BIOS or UEFI.
  • The installer reuses the Omarchy ISO screens, plus FreeBSD network and disk steps with optional encryption.
  • A System > FreeBSD menu brings ZFS boot environments, jails and bhyve into the Omarchy menu.
  • Wi-Fi goes through wpa_supplicant, sound through PipeWire, and Bluetooth through FreeBSD’s own stack.

Review before you install: this is third-party, community software. Read the scripts and README yourself before running anything, and only try it on hardware you can afford to wipe.

My take

Boot environments on the desktop are a killer feature. Break an update, roll back. It’s FreeBSD-CURRENT, so treat it as a fun experiment, not a daily driver yet.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
