NetBSD-current now ships a third editor in its base system next to vi and xedit: atto, a nano/pico-style screen editor that’s only 48KB.
Details
The NetBSD Foundation says it’s there to “ease the transition for new users.” NetBSD ships a modified version with more option handling. Upstream atto took ideas from MicroEmacs, nano, pico and Perfect Emacs.
My take
I’ve been a vi person for 30 years, but I’ve watched plenty of new folks get stuck in it on a fresh box. A tiny, friendly editor in base is a nice welcome mat for BSD newcomers, and 48KB is very NetBSD.
God Bless, and Happy hacking!
