Gifts and Fruit: Ken Claytor Says the Church Doesn’t Get to Pick One

Pastor Ken Claytor of Alive Church wrapped his “Breaking Up With the Lies” series with a message I needed this week.

Three things about the Holy Spirit

Baptism brings power. From Acts 1:8 and Acts 19, Claytor teaches the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a distinct experience that equips us for ministry. Tongues build you up. Prophecy builds up the church. “We need them both.”

Filling is continual. Ephesians 5:18. His line: “One baptism, many fillings.” Yesterday’s encounter won’t carry today’s battle.

Gifts need character. This is where he got sharp: “I am not impressed with your tongue-talking if you ain’t got character.”

My take

Amen. He also said, “The Holy Spirit is God. Not a force, not an energy, not goosebumps.” I’ve seen churches that chase the gifts and churches that only talk fruit, and both end up lopsided. Galatians 5 isn’t a consolation prize for people who don’t prophesy. Ask for the power, then let Him shape how you treat your family, your coworkers and the guy who cut you off in traffic.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
