What’s New in Claude Code 2.1.316: Turn Off Ultrathink, Set Subagent Effort

Claude Code 2.1.316 is out. Last time I covered 2.1.314.

Highlights

  • CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_ULTRATHINK turns off the ultrathink keyword.
  • CLAUDE_CODE_SUBAGENT_EFFORT sets the effort level subagents use when nothing else names one, instead of inheriting the session’s.
  • Private CAs: CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_LOOPED_CROSS_CERT_DROP keeps cross-certificates that certify each other in a loop, for servers whose private CA needs one.
  • Claude apps gateway: pooled group budgets that members share, layered policy mode, and Bedrock guardrail input tagging.
  • Heads-up: fast mode for Opus 4.8 is deprecated and goes away Nov 30. After that it errors instead of falling back.
  • Fixes for shell commands left running after exit, Bash aliases with line breaks, PowerShell hooks, Grep and Glob hanging on Windows, and clearer SSL certificate errors.

My take

The subagent effort setting is a nice way to keep helper agents cheap while the main session thinks hard. If you rely on Opus 4.8 fast mode, plan the move now.

Review before you install: read the release notes yourself, back up your config, and try new versions somewhere you can afford to break first.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
