Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman says the site will gradually become a “logged-in service,” with limited access for visitors without accounts.
What we know
- Reddit gives two reasons: more personalization, and fighting the growing problem of content scrapers.
- A pilot will start in selected markets outside the US in the coming months. What gets locked, where and when hasn’t been decided.
- The front page stays open, and people coming from search or links will see at least the page they clicked.
- More logged-in users also means better-targeted ads.
My take
AI scraping is closing the open web one site at a time. Reddit has been the place where real humans answer real questions, which is exactly why every model wants it. I understand why they’re doing it, but “add reddit to your search” gets a lot worse once you need an account to read the answer.
God Bless, and Happy hacking!
