FreeBSD 15.2 Beta 1: Cross-Build Base Packages on Linux and macOS

FreeBSD 15.2 Beta 1 is out, with the final release targeted for Dec. 8 and weekly betas until then, Phoronix reports.

Highlights

  • Dozens of security fixes, from use-after-free bugs and heap overflows to RCE vectors.
  • Experimental cross-building of base system packages on Linux and macOS hosts (pkg has to be set up on the build host first).
  • A new backlight_enable rc.conf option that saves and restores backlight level across reboots.
  • Clang now defaults to ld.lld, with LLVM 21.1.8, OpenSSH 10.4p1, OpenZFS 2.4.4 and XZ 5.8.4.
  • EC2 desktop AMIs now boot to KDE with XRDP enabled.

My take

The security fix count alone makes 15.2 worth planning for. Betas are for testing, so keep production on the release branch.

Review before you install: read the release notes yourself, back up your config, and try new versions somewhere you can afford to break first.

God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
