After the Linux 7.3 release, the Asahi Linux project published a status report on Apple Silicon support, Phoronix reports.
Highlights
- More upstreaming, including audio work and initial device trees for M4 Pro/Max and M5 on the kernel mailing list.
- Apple M3 support is now general availability in the downstream code, but with no GPU acceleration yet. The reverse-engineering effort has rendered a triangle, and there’s a long road ahead.
- Thunderbolt support for Apple Silicon is out for review.
- Gaming on M1/M2 is getting more realistic with tools like FEX and Wine, and there’s progress on running games outside muvm to deal with page-size differences.
My take
Steady, careful work. M3 without GPU acceleration is still a compromise, so M1/M2 is the sweet spot for now.
God Bless, and Happy hacking!
