Oak Ridge Pairs IBM Quantum Hardware With AMD HPC to Tackle Error Correction

Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Quantum Science Center has a new co-design platform for quantum error correction that pairs IBM quantum processors with an AMD CPU/GPU-based HPC system, The Register reports.

Why it matters

Qubits are fragile, and noise wrecks computations. Error correction is the gate to useful, fault-tolerant machines. QSC director Travis Humble calls it essential to making quantum practical. IBM’s Jay Gambetta says the question is no longer whether error correction works, but how to speed it up and optimize it.

My take

Quantum + classical side by side is where the real work is happening. Fault tolerance still feels a ways off, but this is the right kind of plumbing.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
