Microsoft Drops Windows 11’s PC-to-PC Migration and Points You to OneDrive Instead

Windows 11 had a PC-to-PC Migration tool that moved files and settings straight between two machines over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. According to an updated Microsoft support page, it’s gone, Ghacks reports via Slashdot.

What replaces it

Windows Backup. It needs a personal Microsoft account and backs up Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music to OneDrive. Free OneDrive gives you 5GB, and Microsoft’s own screenshot shows 4.5GB of that already used. It can remember apps, Wi-Fi networks, passwords and some settings, but apps still have to be reinstalled.

My take

Swapping a direct local copy for a cloud account and a 5GB bucket isn’t an upgrade for most people. Years of photos blow past that fast, and it pushes you toward a subscription. If you’re moving to a new PC, copy your data yourself to an external drive first. Or, you know, move to Linux and use rsync. I wrote up how in today’s how-to.

God Bless, and Needs Garlic!
