Apple bought AI audio editing app Samplab back in June, according to a notice the European Commission shared today. The filing says Apple picked up “certain assets” and hired “certain Samplab employees.” Samplab shut down on September 17, and its site now redirects to Apple.com.
What Samplab did
- Audio to MIDI
- Chord detection and editing
- Stem splitting
- Editing single notes inside polyphonic audio without changing the tone
My take
Logic Pro already has Stem Splitter and Chord ID, so polyphonic note editing is the new piece. I’d bet on seeing it in Logic Pro or GarageBand. The DMA rules are the only reason we found out at all.
