Ahold Delhaize Confirms a Cyberattack Took US and European Systems Offline

Ahold Delhaize, the owner of Food Lion, Giant Food, Hannaford, Martin’s and Stop & Shop, confirmed that “malicious actions of others” caused the security issue it first disclosed on October 12. It took websites, apps and other systems offline across most of its US and European brands as a precaution.

Where it stands

  • Physical stores stayed open.
  • So far there’s no evidence sensitive customer, employee or partner data was stolen.
  • Albert Heijn and Belgian e-commerce are back. US brand e-commerce is expected “in the coming days.”
  • It’s reported to the Dutch NCSC and police. It’s the company’s second attack in two years, after November 2024.

My take

Pulling systems offline fast is painful but often the right call. If you shop with these brands, watch for phishing that uses the breach as bait.
