Microsoft Admits the Always On VPN Bug Wasn’t Fixed After All

Microsoft said the October 13 security update fixed Windows 11’s Always On VPN problem. It didn’t. The company quietly set the issue back from “Resolved” to “Mitigated” and apologized for the confusion.

The details

  • Always On VPN connects in the background without prompts. The September 2026 update broke it.
  • It affects Windows 11 24H2 through 26H2.
  • It hits setups where the VPN falls back to a different connection method when the first one fails, like automatic protocol selection.

My take

If you run Always On VPN, don’t assume October fixed it. Check Microsoft’s release health notes and keep the mitigation in place. And after an update, test that the thing you care about actually works.
