Voyager Nears One Light-Day From Earth: An Original Team Member Looks Back

Voyager is close to one light-day from Earth. That means a command takes a whole day to get there, and the reply takes another day to come back. The probes launched almost 50 years ago and they’re still running.

The interview

The Register’s Kettle podcast sat down with Dr. Garry Hunt, the UK’s only member of the original eight-person Voyager imaging team. He talks about his role in the images we all know, from the outer planet portraits to the Pale Blue Dot, what’s next for the mission, and the state of science today. His headline line is that in space “we’ve gone from exploration to exploitation.”

My take

A spacecraft built in the 1970s is still talking to us from a light-day away. Psalm 19:1 says the heavens declare the glory of God, and Voyager has been proving it for half a century.
