Correction: Linux 7.3, Not 7.4, Will Likely Be This Year’s LTS Kernel

In my Linux 7.4-rc1 post (2371) I passed along that 7.4 would likely be this year’s LTS. Stable maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman says otherwise, Phoronix reports.

What Greg said

He’d assumed 7.4 would land in early January, so he was already planning on 7.3. Even with 7.4 now due December 20, he’s sticking with it: “let’s just count on 7.3.y to be the next LTS unless something really crazy comes up.” He added that people trying to “force” stuff into 7.4 is “the best possible reason to NOT have it be the next LTS.”

My take

Good call. A record-size merge window isn’t what you want to support for years. If you plan around LTS kernels, plan on 7.3. And thanks for keeping me honest, Phoronix.

God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
