You don’t need to pay for monitoring at home. Zabbix is free, open source and will watch your servers, network gear and services, and tell you when something breaks. Here’s the general setup.
What you need
A small Linux box or VM (a couple of cores and 4 GB of RAM is plenty for a home lab), plus a database. Zabbix’s own download page builds the exact install commands for your distro, version and database.
Steps
- Install Zabbix server, the web frontend and the agent from the official repo for your distro.
- Create the database and import the initial schema, then set the DB password in the server config.
- Run through the web installer and change the default admin password right away.
- Install the Zabbix agent on each Linux machine you want to watch and point it at your server.
- For switches, routers and access points, enable SNMP on the device and add a host using the matching template.
- Set up a notification method (email works fine) so alerts actually reach you.
Tips
- Start with the built-in templates and tune triggers once you see what’s noisy.
- Use SNMPv3 instead of v2c where your gear supports it.
- Keep the web UI on your LAN or behind a VPN, not exposed to the internet.
Happy Hacking!
