NVIDIA Picks OpenShell to Keep AI Agents in Line

NVIDIA introduced the OpenShell Reference Architecture, a recipe for running, watching and policing AI agents with its OpenShell secure runtime on NVIDIA hardware.

The quick version

  • Jensen Huang: agents get “the freedom to do useful work within clearly defined boundaries.”
  • Agents like Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw and OpenCode already sandbox tools. OpenShell goes a level up, governing credentials, identity and policy boundaries.
  • The blueprint wants Vera Rubin for models, Vera CPUs for agent harnesses and BlueField-4 DPUs running Sentry to watch agent behavior.
  • Partners include Canonical, SUSE, Red Hat, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, and it covers agents from Anthropic, Cohere, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Perplexity, Reflection and SpaceXSI.
  • Heads up: OpenShell collects telemetry by default, and you can opt out.

My take

Agents need guardrails. That part is right. But you need NVIDIA hardware top to bottom to do it their way. For the rest of us, plain sandboxes and least privilege still go a long way.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
