If you keep more than one kernel around, this one’s for you. DHH merged PR #15966 into the quattro branch on October 21, adding an Update > Kernel menu to Omarchy. It landed the day after 4.5 RC1, so it’s not in the RC. Look for it in the next version.
What’s new
- The menu only shows up when you have more than one kernel installed. It sits under Channel and puts a check mark next to the one Limine boots by default.
- Pick a kernel, type your password once, and a notification tells you to reboot to use the new default. Click it and it reboots.
- There’s a terminal version too:
omarchy-kernel(orget) shows the default,omarchy-kernel listshows what’s installed, andomarchy-kernel set <name>changes it. setrefuses kernels that aren’t installed and won’t run when Direct Boot is active, since the firmware skips Limine then.- Under the hood it moves the kernel to the front of
BOOT_ORDER, rebuilds just that one kernel withlimine-mkinitcpio(about 13 seconds on DHH’s box) and verifies the boot tree. If anything fails, it rolls back to the previous order. The PR ships 13 test cases.
My take
I always keep a fallback kernel on my machines. When an update goes sideways, it’s the difference between a five-minute fix and an evening of rescue USB fun. Being able to flip the default from a menu, with an automatic rollback if the rebuild fails, is exactly the kind of small, careful change I like to see. No more hand-editing boot config at midnight.
Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
