With Fedora 45 out and Omarchy getting AMD’s attention, I’m thinking about spinning up a Fedora 45 VM next to my Omarchy setup to compare. This is a plan I’m considering, not something I’ve done.
What I’m thinking about
- A throwaway VM: Fedora 45 Workstation in a VM with a clean snapshot, nothing personal in it
- Try the new stuff: Stratis pools from the installer, snapshots, and the tighter ptrace defaults
- Compare: how GNOME 51 on Fedora feels next to Hyprland on Omarchy for daily dev work
- Notes: write down what breaks and what’s better, then decide if it’s worth more time
Open questions
- Is Stratis worth it on a single-disk laptop, or only with multiple drives?
- Would an Atomic desktop like Silverblue be the better comparison?
Review before you install: read the release notes yourself, back up your config, and try new versions somewhere you can afford to break first.
Isolate it: try it in a disposable VM first, with a snapshot you can roll back.
My take
Trying another distro in a VM costs nothing and teaches a lot. Got suggestions for what to test?
God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
