The Register spotted two brand-new, unrelated projects that both bring vintage Mac looks to Linux.
ZacOS 9
Only a couple of weeks old, from Adam Lawson. It recreates the Mac OS 8/9 “Platinum” look as an all-new Wayland environment: window manager, filer, global menu bar, Control Panel, Control Strip, desk accessories and more. It can network with Macs and hook into the SheepShaver emulator to run classic Mac apps. There’s a full preinstalled Debian image, or smaller Debian packages. The project openly credits Claude and Copilot as coding assistants. (Its icons are based on his dog, Zac.)
Mavernix
The other one goes for the shiny Mavericks-era Aqua look instead.
My take
I love seeing AI coding assistants used to build something fun and personal like this, and the project is upfront about it. Grab the VM image if you want to play, not your daily machine.
God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
