Update: Omarchy on the M6 Mac mini Now Runs on the GPU, and the Neural Engine Is Powered On

Update to my earlier post, Omarchy now boots from the M6 Mac mini’s internal drive. Back then the About screen still said llvmpipe, Mesa’s software renderer. Not anymore.

What’s new

  • Day 6, GPU is up. Joshua Warren of the Omarchy M team posted on October 22 that Omarchy on the M6 now uses the GPU. The screenshot shows “Apple M6 (G18G B1)” instead of software rendering.
  • He credits Miguel C (@Acelogic_), who says OpenGL 4.6 and Vulkan 1.4 conformance “is in the works.” That’s still a work in progress, not done.
  • Day 7, Neural Engine. Early October 24, Warren reported: “Neural Engine: powered on, control processor answers.” MLX sees the M6 GPU and 15.6 GB of memory, but the first op failed on a missing GPU helper in the driver, and a fix was building. Inference is the goal, not a result yet.
  • The Neural Engine work is happening in the open in Warren’s omarchy-ane repo, where two pull requests landed on October 24.
  • Ethernet, still on the to-do list on day five, isn’t mentioned in either update.

My take

One week from the macOS About screen to Omarchy with a working GPU and a Neural Engine that answers. That’s wild. Just remember this is a community bring-up by the Omarchy M team, not official M6 support you can install today. I’ll keep following it, and I’m waiting to see that first local inference run on the ANE.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
