iPhone Duo Week One: Teardowns, a Safari Fix in the Works, and a Failed Dust Test

The iPhone Duo has been out a few days and MacRumors had three stories on it this weekend. Here they are in one place.

The teardowns

  • REWA Technology and Phone Repair Guru opened it up. Two battery cells, 2,962 mAh and 1,921 mAh, total 4,883 mAh, both held with electrically released adhesive.
  • The logic board has the A20 Pro and Apple’s C2 modem. The USB-C port looks fully modular. The Touch ID button can come out, but it’s a hard job.
  • Apple has posted its repair manual, and iFixit’s teardown is expected soon.

Safari on the outer screen

  • In a WebKit post, Apple’s Jen Simmons said Safari 27.1 keeps pages beside its side-mounted controls on the outer display, filling the strip with the page’s background color. That wastes width.
  • Letting pages run under the controls with viewport-fit="cover" would work, but Apple’s research says many sites don’t leave room on every edge. Apple is looking at a safer option.
  • Safari 27.1 does add automatic two-page PDFs when you hold the Duo half-folded like a book. Fold-posture detection for developers is behind feature flags.

The durability test

  • JerryRigEverything got dust into the hinge despite the IP68 rating, and it overwhelmed the magnets that hold it shut.
  • The bend test left a permanent green line on the inner display before it stopped responding. The outer Ceramic Shield 2 scratched at level 7, the inner screen at level 2.
  • Zack Nelson: “most do survive. The iPhone Duo did not.”

My take

Modular USB-C and removable batteries are good news for repair. A hinge that lets dust in is not. If you got one, a case and some care around the beach and the shop floor seem like a good idea.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
