Ars Technica reports the US Space Force wants a new spaceport running within four years, to take pressure off Florida and California.
The details
- Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, head of Space Systems Command: “We need this capability by 2030, but I’m also a pragmatist.” He compared it to an airport, “but even louder.”
- There’s no site and no decision timeline yet. Options include public-private, a federal installation, or state land.
- There were 175 orbital launch attempts last year from Cape Canaveral, Kennedy and Vandenberg. Officials expect the country to need 700 launches a year by 2036.
My take
Four times the launches in about a decade is wild. Where it goes matters a lot to the people who’ll live next to it. I’ll be watching which states raise their hands.
Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
