Update: iOS 27.2 Is Out, and iPhone AI Images Now Carry a Hidden SynthID Watermark

Update: Following my iOS 27.2 RC post, the final release is out.

MacRumors reports Image Playground images, and some Apple Intelligence photo edits, now get a SynthID watermark. SynthID is Google’s tool that marks AI content at the pixel level, not in metadata, and it’s meant to survive cropping, filters and compression. Google, Apple, OpenAI and others use it.

The details

Every Image Playground image gets it. Extend and Reframe edits did too in MacRumors’ testing. Clean Up depends on the size of the edit: small ones didn’t, big ones did. There’s no way to check on the iPhone itself; you use Google’s SynthID Detector site.

My take

I’m good with this. Labeling AI images matters more every month.

God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
