AlpineBSD Wants to Be an AI-Free OS: NetBSD Kernel, Alpine-Style Userland

Days after Daemonarchy, another BSD project shows up, going the opposite direction. AlpineBSD wants a NetBSD kernel with a userland inspired by Alpine Linux, using “as little AI-generated software as possible.”

The policy

Any software whose code, docs, binaries or assets include generative AI output is treated as “tainted.” NetBSD already presumes LLM-generated code is tainted in its commit guidelines.

Where it stands

It barely exists yet. No install media, just a manual bootstrap. It has a policy before it has an ISO.

My take

I use AI agents every day, so this isn’t my lane, but I’m glad somebody’s trying it. Choice is the whole point of open source. The hard part will be packages. A lot of upstream code already has AI help in it, and proving it doesn’t will be tough.

God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
