Lifeway Research quizzed 2,012 American churchgoers on basic Bible knowledge. The average score was 51, and 65% got an F.
What they found
- 94% knew Moses received the Ten Commandments, and 80% could fill in “believes” in John 3:16
- Only 45% named Saul as Israel’s first king (32% said David)
- Two in three thought Hezekiah is a book of the Bible, and 44% thought the Gospel of Thomas is in it
- Only 11% could put Deborah, David and Goliath, Jonah and Esther in order
- Daily Bible readers averaged 66. People who rarely or never read averaged 36. Only 21% read every day
My take
This isn’t about trivia. It’s about hunger. The Bereans “received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day” (Acts 17:11). The Holy Spirit is the one who leads us into all truth (John 16:13), and He loves to take the Word we’ve hidden in our hearts and bring it back to us right when we need it (John 14:26). He can’t remind you of what you never read.
So here’s the challenge: open it every day this week, even if it’s one chapter. Ask the Spirit to teach you before you start. Then take the quiz again in a month.
God Bless, and Happy hacking!
