Copilot Chat Has Usage Caps, and Microsoft Won’t Tell You the Numbers

Microsoft is adding usage limits to more Copilot Chat features for business users who don’t have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, The Register reports, and it won’t publish the caps.

  • Microsoft “doesn’t publish specific limits because they’re subject to change”
  • When you hit one, you get a notice telling you when to retry. Tasks already running aren’t interrupted
  • Admins can’t adjust the limits
  • The notice usually includes an upgrade button that requests a license from your admin, or lets you buy one if self-service purchases are allowed. Admins can turn direct purchases off
  • Microsoft says hitting a limit “might indicate interest in additional Copilot capabilities”

My take

Hidden limits plus an upsell button is not a great look. If you run a tenant, decide now whether you want self-service purchases switched off.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
