Nicky Gumbel, the man behind the Alpha Course, has been elected to the Church of England’s General Synod, representing the Diocese of London in the House of Clergy. It’s his first term on the Church’s national governing body, and he’s going in with a clear ask: make evangelism the central priority.
What he’s pushing for
- Stop letting internal disputes and institutional worries overshadow the mission. “The time has come for us to unite in love for a whole generation that has never heard how much they are loved by God.”
- He sees growing interest in Christianity among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, and wants a national leadership pathway for young people called to full-time ministry.
- “We have a new Archbishop. We will have a new Synod. It is a new season.”
My take
This lines up with what the bishops were saying earlier this week about a rebirth. When the Holy Spirit starts stirring a generation, the worst thing the church can do is argue in the hallway. Alpha has been a doorway for millions. Putting that same heart at the center of a national body is exciting.
