Phoronix covers Beeper, a research project from ETH Zurich, NYU and NVIDIA that does application-layer (L7) parsing inside the kernel with eBPF. It was presented at Linux Plumbers 2026, and the code, written in Rust, is on GitHub.
The numbers
With an in-kernel HTTP parser and cache, the presentation showed up to 3.4x throughput. A related “hyper-fast-path” project for the Rust Hyper HTTP library showed up to 4.5x. Use cases include monitoring L7 traffic, caching and payload-based redirects.
My take
eBPF keeps showing up in places nobody expected. It’s still research, so I want to see what makes it to production, but this is a fun one to watch.
God Bless, and Use the Source!
