Discord is ditching Electron for a Rust desktop client, The Verge reports. CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy said they’ve used Rust since 2018 for infra and voice, and “the holy grail was getting the whole client there.” Electron and React Native go away; mobile keeps a native UI but shares app code with desktop via Rust.
He posted a Windows client screenshot at about 290MB of RAM, versus 1GB+ in the current app once you’re in a few servers. No ship date yet; they “hope to get it into testing with users soon.”
My take
Less RAM for a chat app shouldn’t be news in 2026, but here we are. Rooting for the Rust rewrite.
God Bless, and Use the Source!
