England Rugby’s Ben Earl: ‘I Pray Daily, Morning and Evening’

Ben Earl is known for hard carries and raw power on the pitch. The England and Lions forward, with more than 50 caps, just told the David Jones Golf Goals YouTube channel where his real strength comes from, Premier Christian News reports.

What he said

  • He came to Christ at 18 while stressed out over his A-Levels: “I looked for more of a support and found it through my faith.”
  • He’s honest that sport and faith can pull against each other: “It’s an inherently selfish occupation… and that goes against everything that Christianity preaches about.”
  • He leans on Christian teammates, including Saracens and England captain Maro Itoje, calling them “your compass and your focal point.”
  • “I pray daily morning and evening, I try and go to church as much as I can on a Sunday, fixture allowing… it’s important to have something to fall back on when things aren’t going right.”
  • And he says he’s enjoying “stuff being sort of out of my control, what will be will be.”

My take

That last line is the whole Christian walk in one sentence. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. When you give God the wheel, the pressure doesn’t own you anymore.

I also love that he’s honest about the tension. Pro sports pulls you toward self. Prayer, church and brothers who hold you accountable pull you back to Jesus. That’s not weakness, that’s how the Spirit keeps us. Whatever your “pitch” is this week, pray morning and evening and find your people.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
