IceCube Is Catching Ghost Particles 10 Billion Times More Energetic Than the Sun’s

Trillions of neutrinos pass through your body every second, and you never feel them. They’re called “ghost particles” because they almost never interact with anything.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a detector buried in a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice, is catching very high-energy ones from deep space. Some carry about 10 billion times the energy of the neutrinos coming from the Sun.

Why it matters

  • Because neutrinos fly straight through almost everything, they carry clean information from the most extreme places in the universe.
  • Research on neutrinos has been part of five Nobel Prizes in Physics. This year Francis Halzen won for his work on IceCube and finding high-energy neutrinos from space.
  • Scientists hope they’ll shed light on the Big Bang and the universe’s most violent events.

What a creation. “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1), and some of that glory comes through as particles we can barely catch.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
