SUSE Is Cutting About 10% of Its Staff, and It’s Blaming AI

SUSE is cutting about 10% of its workforce, and the CEO is pointing at automation and AI.

According to The Register, which saw the memo, CEO Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen told the roughly 1,900 employees the cuts are “necessary for us to adapt and build a sustainable, resilient SUSE for the long term.” He wrote that “AI capabilities are advancing exponentially, forcing us to radically reimagine our work.” The rest of the company gets the fiscal 2027 strategy on November 16.

My take

SUSE has been part of enterprise Linux for decades, and it’s owned by private equity (EQT). “AI” is becoming the go-to reason for layoffs that might have happened anyway. Either way, it’s real people, and a lot of them are open source contributors.

If you run SLES or openSUSE, nothing changes today. But keep an eye on the November 16 strategy. If you’re one of the people affected, I’m praying you land somewhere good fast.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
