Juno Shows Jupiter’s Invisible Shield Is More Complex Than Earth’s

NASA’s Juno has given us the most detailed look yet at Jupiter’s bow shock, the invisible boundary where the solar wind slams into the planet’s magnetic field.

What they found

Researchers at the University of Iowa found Jupiter relies on a much more complex mix of plasma waves and shock regions than Earth does to slow and heat the incoming particles. The results could also help explain extreme shock waves from exploding stars.

My take

Every planet with a magnetic field has a line the solar wind can’t simply blow through. It reminds me of what God told Job about the sea: “This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt” (Job 38:11).

God Bless, and Happy hacking!
