Robin Schumacher has a column at The Christian Post called “God must interrupt you to save you,” and the title alone preached to me.
He opens with a Wall Street Journal columnist who got so fed up with notifications that she yelled at her watch, “You’re not the boss of me!” Most of us know that feeling. And honestly, that’s how we talk to God too.
He keeps reaching
Schumacher walks through the verses where God reaches out and gets ignored: “All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people” (Isaiah 65:2), and Jesus over Jerusalem, “how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing” (Matthew 23:37). His bottom line: we need God to break through our rebellion, because we can’t fix ourselves.
My take
The biggest interruption is salvation itself, but the Holy Spirit doesn’t stop there. He still interrupts. A nudge to call somebody. A check in your spirit before you say yes to something. A verse that won’t leave you alone. Saul was on his way to Damascus with a plan, and Jesus interrupted it (Acts 9). Philip was in the middle of a revival and the Spirit sent him to a desert road (Acts 8:26-29).
Surrender isn’t losing control. It’s handing it to Someone who actually knows where you’re going. Next time your plans get interrupted, stop and ask, “Holy Spirit, is this You?”
Lord, interrupt us. Break into our schedules and our stubbornness, and make us quick to say yes. Amen.
God Bless, and Use the Source!
