Phoronix says it hears about a new “from scratch” operating system built mostly by AI agents almost every week. This week’s is NULLos, with its own UEFI bootloader, kernel and a self-hosting C compiler. The twist: it’s closed source.
The pitch
The developer told Phoronix: “one person who cannot be infiltrated, instead of a team from which code can leak, or where vulnerabilities can be found and exploited before they are fixed.”
My take
I’m not buying it. Hiding the code doesn’t stop anyone from finding bugs; it stops friendly people from finding them first. Closed source plus one maintainer plus AI-written code means nobody else can review any of it. That’s a bus factor of one and a black box. Cool hobby project, maybe. A security model, no. Open source is how you earn trust.
God Bless, and Use the Source!
