openEuler Brings China’s Enterprise Linux to the Desktop

The Register stopped by the openEuler booth at Open Source Summit Europe 2026 and took its new workstation edition for a spin.

The quick version

  • openEuler is the community version of Huawei’s EulerOS, a version of which got official UNIX certification.
  • It’s now run by the OpenAtom Foundation, co-founded in 2020 by Huawei with Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent and Inspur.
  • Its CentOS roots are giving way to homegrown containers, AI tools and now a desktop edition.

My take

You don’t hear much about openEuler over here, but it’s a serious distro with a lot of muscle behind it. Interesting to see it chase the desktop. I’ll stick with Arch and Omarchy, but more Linux on more desktops is a good thing.

Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
