Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is backing Nagare Labs and its Z2RAM, The Register reports. Gelsinger’s firm Playground Global is helping fund it.
The pitch
Nearly SRAM speed, close to DRAM density, and easier to make than HBM or LPDDR. It’s built on oxide semiconductors out of Georgia Tech research and meant to be bonded right onto compute logic in 3D. “We’ve had no major forms of innovation in memory for three decades,” Gelsinger said.
My take
Memory is the bottleneck for AI, so this matters if it works. But the history of new memory types is full of failures, so I’ll believe it when it ships.
