An international group led by the German Society for Infectious Diseases published the first coordinated clinical guidelines for personalized phage therapy, using viruses that kill bacteria, in Nature Medicine, ScienceDaily reports.
- 20 professional organizations, 18 experts (including regulators) and two patient advocacy groups
- More than 60 recommendations on selecting, testing, manufacturing, giving and monitoring phages
- Phages target specific strains, so each one has to be matched to the patient’s bacteria
- Not recommended as routine yet: controlled trials are still thin. In a Belgian series of 100 patients, 77% improved and the target bacteria was gone in 61%
My take
With antibiotic resistance rising, this is a hopeful step for people who are out of options.
God Bless, and Use the Source!
